McAllen ISD honors nearly 800 students across academics, arts and athletics at special board meeting

The McAllen Independent School District Board of Trustees held a special meeting on Feb. 27, 2025, at McAllen High School and recognized close to 800 students for achievements in advanced academics, bilingual programs, fine arts and athletics.
The recognitions covered multiple campuses and programs across the district, including students who earned dual‑language high school Spanish credit, National Merit and AP Scholar distinctions, National Hispanic Recognition and National First‑Generation recognition, All‑Region and All‑City band/choir/orchestra placements, and district and regional athletic finishes. District staff also highlighted team results such as district and regional runners‑up, district champions, state qualifiers and bi‑district champions where applicable.
District officials opened the meeting by saying they were proud to recognize students who represented the district “on the fields, on the courts, and in the classroom” and invited parents to photograph award recipients at the edge of the stage. Announcers and district coordinators read the names of students and identified school principals, coaches and program coordinators for each recognition group. Named schools singled out during the recognitions included McAllen High School, McAllen Memorial High School, Nikki Rowe High School, Achieve Early College High School, Lamar Academy, and multiple middle and elementary campuses.
Academic awards listed included National Merit commended honors and multiple AP Scholar distinctions and National Recognitions for Hispanic and first‑generation students. Advanced Academic Services staff and college board coordinators from individual campuses were named alongside honored students. The district also recognized a student appointed as a student ambassador by the Emotional Intelligence Training and Research Institute and distributed multiple honors for fine arts participants who made all‑region, all‑city or area ensembles.
Athletic recognitions included cross‑country, volleyball and tennis results. McAllen High School runners and teams were recognized for district championships and state qualifying finishes; boys and girls cross‑country teams from several high schools were noted as district champions or regional qualifiers. Volleyball and tennis district finishes and coach names were listed for winning teams.
The meeting included no public comment. After the recognitions, Trustee Reynaldo moved to adjourn and Trustee Rivera seconded. The motion carried by a 3‑1 vote, and the board adjourned at 6:38 p.m.
