A Homer business owner testified to the Senate Finance Committee on Feb. 27 that severe erosion is threatening Homer Spit Road and nearby businesses and asked lawmakers to support a $300,000 FY26 capital appropriation for planning and initial design of erosion mitigation.
Sean Grimes, owner of the Tackle Shack on Homer Spit Road, said a November storm produced more than $50,000 in damage to his property and that the beach level has dropped about four feet over four years. He told the committee that private measures he’s funded (about $70,000) currently act as a de‑facto seawall but that a long‑term plan and public investment are needed to protect infrastructure, beach access and local businesses.
Why it matters: Testimony described threats to critical local transportation infrastructure and business livelihoods, and asked for capital planning funds so the city’s proposed mitigation measures can be designed and implemented.
Ending: The request was made as part of public testimony on SB 57 (capital budget); the committee did not vote at the hearing.
