The Ohio Senate on Feb. 25 passed Senate Bill 20 to designate the first week of May as Ohio Stroke Awareness Week, a bipartisan measure intended to raise public awareness of stroke symptoms and prompt quicker emergency response.
Senator Antonio, a sponsor, emphasized stroke’s prevalence — “every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke,” he said — and urged public education on the FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) recognition tool. Senator Manning, a co-sponsor, described personal family losses to stroke and said such designations encourage people to seek preventive care and screenings.
The bill passed on a 32-0 roll call. Sponsors and supporters urged wider public education to shorten the time between a suspected stroke and medical care; no funding provision was included in the floor discussion and supporters indicated outreach would rely on existing public-health channels.
The designation will appear in state code as an awareness week; it does not create a state program or appropriation.
