Motorcycle group donates backpacks, supplies to Coralville Central students

Packers for Backpacks, a volunteer group from the motorcycle community, has supplied hundreds of backpacks and school supplies to Coralville Central and other district schools, speakers told the Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors on Feb. 25.
The group’s organizer, Bill, said he has been collecting and buying supplies for five years and has raised “just a little over $32,000” to buy materials for students. "I just give it away. I don't ever try to ask for any recognition," Bill said at the board meeting.
Michael Mendoza, student family advocate at Coralville Central, said last year the group helped fill “around a hundred plus backpacks” and that supplies also were shared with Alexander and other district schools. "Bill's is really just impacting our community as a whole," Mendoza said.
Board members thanked the volunteers and the Coralville Central staff for coordinating distribution. President Malone said the board appreciated the group's commitment and praised the motorcyclists for reducing teachers’ burdens by supplying classroom materials.
The presenters asked members of the public who want additional information to contact the school directly; no formal action was required or taken by the board on the showcase.
The board’s recognition of the group occurred during the education showcase portion of the Feb. 25 meeting.
