Committee hears briefings on emerging issues: youth task force recruitment, probation projects and senior nutrition expansions

The Children, Seniors and Families Committee concluded its meeting with a series of brief status updates from county offices on emerging program issues and outreach plans.
Office of Children and Families staff said the county is recruiting high-school applicants for the youth task force, with four vacancies (two in District 4 and two in District 2). The office also announced a summer internship opportunity for current youth task force members focused on policy research and supports for unhoused students and post-secondary transitions. Committee members asked staff for outreach materials and social-media graphics to promote the opportunity to eligible students.
Probation staff reported programmatic work at James Ranch and juvenile hall, including voter-registration and a new youth advisory council at juvenile hall intended to give residents a voice on facility improvement and programming. Probation also highlighted a collaborative poster project on workers’ rights with the Office of Women’s Policy and the Office of Labor Standards Enforcement; youth may earn prizes with proceeds available for restitution or reentry support.
On seniors programming, county staff reported that a CHAMPS restaurant-meal pilot launched with partners Self-Help for the Elderly and The Health Trust and that the senior nutrition program continues to expand culturally specific options and pick-up services. Child Support Services leadership said they are monitoring federal budget developments because the program is funded in part by federal dollars.
