Committee passes annual data bill to expand public safety data reporting to the portal

Representative Wilcox described House Bill 354 as the annual public-safety data bill that adds items to the public safety data portal. The sponsor said the bill will help legislators and this committee make data-driven decisions and that work is ongoing to integrate the remaining major law-enforcement data source (Utah Highway Patrol’s Tyler Technology integration).
Jeff Beeman, executive director of the Statewide Association of Prosecutors, testified in support and said prosecutors want to be transparent but highlighted technical and interoperability challenges; Beeman said the portal should strike a balance between transparency and victim privacy and investigative integrity.
Representative Wilcox said one major law enforcement agency remained to complete the data feed and expected near-term progress. The committee voted unanimously to recommend favorably House Bill 354 to the Senate and the motion passed 4–0.
