Public commenter urges board to curb divisive rhetoric and highlight school safety work

Matthew Fields (identified in the meeting sign-up as the public speaker) told trustees he has worked in the district for six years as an executive director of technology and has done work on safety and security. He described having reviewed a large volume of alerts and building a bullying-and-suicide alert program and said he has taken the director of safety duties seriously, often without compensation. Fields said he has experienced personal attacks following the prior board meeting and asked trustees to "stop" rhetoric that he described as "venomous" and divisive. "If you have something to say, then bring solutions and create solidarity," he told the board. He also referenced national reports that examined Uvalde and urged professional, unified responses to safety questions.
Board members thanked Fields for speaking and for his work on safety; the president and superintendent subsequently moved on to agenda business.
