McAllen ISD approves 2025 summer-school calendar and site plan

The McAllen Independent School District Board of Trustees on Feb. 25 approved the district’s summer-school program for summer 2025, including dates, sites, transportation and meal provisions, and pay rates for staff.
Administration recommended and the board approved a 15-day elementary and secondary schedule running Monday, June 9, through Friday, June 27, with daily hours of 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; bilingual programs have a 16-day requirement beginning June 6, the presentation said. Trustees approved the plan by voice vote, 6-0.
Dr. Cynthia Olivares, director for state and federal programs, told trustees the schedule provides 10 days of STAR prep for high-school students before the district’s summer STAR testing window, which runs June 17–27. Elementary summer sites will be clustered into three sites with six campuses per site; elementary campuses named in the presentation included Escandon, Jackson and McAuliffe. Leon Middle School was listed as the middle-school site; high-school offerings will be hosted at the three comprehensive high schools and at Achieve Early College High School, which will again offer SDC dual-enrollment courses.
The Novato Parent Center will host the migrant summer program and parent classes; McFund (city partnership) locations will be offered at five sites this summer and were separated from the district’s elementary summer sites to avoid scheduling conflicts, staff said. The district’s Child Nutrition Department will provide breakfast and lunch at each summer site, and transportation will run from students’ home campuses to summer sites and back each day, according to the presentation.
The board was told summer-school pay rates remain the same as the prior year; administration said pay rates were adjusted last summer and were not changed for 2025. Trustees moved to approve the item (mover not specified in the public record) with a second by Trustee Delagarza Lopez; the motion passed 6-0.
No budget amounts or site capacity numbers were provided in open session materials presented to the board; staff answered questions about calendar alignment with assessments and program clustering but did not provide a campus-by-campus enrollment forecast in open session.
