Board pushes up superintendent budget timeline amid reevaluation year; approves budget amendments

District finance staff told the Cumberland County Board of Education on Feb. 27 that the superintendent’s proposed budget will be presented to the board earlier than originally scheduled so the district and county can coordinate during a property revaluation year.

Jay (district finance staff) said the superintendent’s budget will be brought to the board March 27, and the district expects to deliver the budget to the county by May 13–15 (statutory deadlines apply). Finance staff cautioned that county property revaluation and a yet‑to‑set tax rate could delay the county’s final revenue estimates until May or June, which could in turn affect how much additional funding the county can provide to the schools. Staff said they remain committed to increasing teacher and classified supplements and will work with the county as revenue figures become available.

During the Budget and Finance Committee meeting the board also approved listed budget amendments that allocate funds the district planned to receive, including federal funds tied to military‑connected student programs that flow to specific schools offering after‑school services.

Board members discussed whether to present a single “full” budget ask to the county or to present a more conservative request that reflects only revenue the district already controls. Some members urged the board to make its full request to maintain pressure on the county to fund teacher compensation increases; staff said they would present the superintendent’s full proposal in March and that the board could revise its final budget submission to the county after county revenue estimates are available.
