Longtime Port Hueneme resident Orbein Carpenter recalls wartime service, city redevelopment and community life

Orbein Carpenter, a longtime Port Hueneme resident and former postmaster and city council member, described his military service, tenure with the U.S. Postal Service and decades of local civic life during an oral-history interview recorded January 27, 2024.

Carpenter said he “joined the Marines in July of 'forty 3. In December of 'forty 3, I was in the South Pacific until early 19 45,” and later served on active duty again during the Korean War after activation of the California National Guard.

The interview placed Carpenter’s personal history alongside details of the city’s postwar growth. He recounted working for the U.S. Postal Service for about 40 years and serving as Port Hueneme’s postmaster from 1970 to 1975; he also described multiple terms on the city council and said, “When I was mayor of the city,” recalling conversations with former naval officers and local redevelopment leaders.
