The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved travel and expense coverage for Harlingen High School, Harlingen High School South and all five middle school speech and debate teams to attend the National Speech and Debate Association national finals in Des Moines, Iowa, June 14–21, 2025, as requested by coaches.
The request was presented by Leanne Entz on behalf of the teams’ coaches. "We've had students from Harlingen High School, Harlingen High School South, and all 5 middle schools qualify for the National Speech and Debate Association national finals to be held in Des Moines, Iowa, June Fourteenth through the 20 first," Entz said during the special meeting, asking the board for permission to travel and compete.
Trustee Dr. Muniz moved to approve the request and Trustee Mr. Jaimis seconded. During discussion Trustee Nolan asked whether the motion authorized only travel or also payment of related costs; the board clarified the motion covered both travel and funding for the trip. The board voted "aye" and the motion carried unanimously.
The approval authorizes district staff to finalize travel and expense arrangements for student participation at the national tournament. The district did not specify per-student costs or funding sources during the discussion.
