Elmwood Park schools outline summer learning academy, ESY, credit recovery and EL programs

At a board meeting, Elmwood Park CUSD 401 leaders described summer learning plans that the district says are intended to reduce learning loss and provide targeted services for students with specialized needs.
District administrators said the Summer Learning Academy will be housed at John Mills Elementary School June 16–July 17, Monday through Thursday, with daily hours of 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; the program will not meet June 19 (Juneteenth) or July 4. District and grant funds will pay for the program, and the district will use benchmark data, report-card performance levels, EL access scores and teacher recommendations to create invitations and prioritize seats. District staff said a parent agreement will be used to confirm participation so seats are not left empty.
Staff described extended school year (ESY) services as separate from the Summer Learning Academy. ESY is for students with individualized education programs (IEPs) who qualify based on regression/recoupment or related-service needs; ESY services and related therapies (speech, occupational therapy, social work) will be funded by district special-education funds because they are tied to IEP requirements.
The district also described a credit-recovery offering for high-school students at Elmwood Park High School to be held Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon; staff said the fee will be $150 per student. An English-immersion summer program for multilingual learners will be funded by Title III and overseen by the district’s EL staff, and a kindergarten-readiness program paid for with Title I funds will be offered at each elementary school closer to the start of the school year to familiarize incoming kindergartners with their building and routines.
Administrators said the district will use multiple outreach methods for registration, including QR-code sign-ups, and planned an April follow-up to finalize lists and logistics.
No formal board action was taken on the summer programs during the meeting; staff presented the plans and took questions.
