Sheila Blanco, public information manager for Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, said the district intends to opt out of Georgia House Bill 581, known as the Save Our Homes Act.
The bill would establish a statewide floating homestead exemption and limit annual property tax assessment increases to the rate of inflation; taxing entities may opt out if they do so by March 1, Blanco said. Because Chatham County already has an exemption provided by the Stevens Day bill and because of uncertainty about HB 581's effects on district funding, SCCPSS announced it intends to opt out and scheduled public hearings to gather input.
The district also announced a formal vote on an opt-out resolution scheduled for Feb. 19. The board has not yet taken final action; the Feb. 19 meeting will determine whether the district formally opts out before the March 1 opt-out deadline.
The announcement did not specify dates or locations for the public hearings, nor did it include wording of the proposed opt-out resolution. Blanco directed interested parties to the district’s agenda materials and meeting videos for additional details.
