The McAlester City Council voted unanimously to approve a resolution to fund economic development for the Mid McAlester project located along the Georgia Expressway, the council confirmed at its regular meeting.
Councilors were told the county commissioners have already passed their resolution and that the city’s approval is the next step. Officials said the project plan was recommended by the committee and that the resolution must be followed by planning and zoning review; a planning and zoning meeting was reported as scheduled for the following Tuesday. Two public hearings were announced: one will occur at the council’s March 11 meeting (the speaker said a special meeting may be required beforehand) and a second hearing is scheduled for the March 25 meeting.
City legal and staff representatives also briefed councilors on the procedural steps completed to date. Councilor Beatty made the motion to approve; Councilor Roden seconded. The roll call vote was recorded as yes from Councilors Gilmore, Woodley, Roden, Beatty and the Mayor; the motion carried.
Why it matters: the resolution commits the city to participate with the county in funding and advancing an economic-development project designed to attract investment along the Georgia Expressway. Planning and zoning review and public hearings are the next required public steps.
