The Somerville City Licenses and Permits Committee at its February meeting recommended approval of a Class 2 used-car dealer license and a garage license for Assembly Square Auto Sales LLC at 37 Mystic Ave, sending both licenses to the full City Council for final action.
The committee recommendation covers two license applications identified in the agenda as items 25-02-71 and 25-01-804: a Class 2 used-car dealer license for on-site sales and a garage license to store vehicles. Attorney Adam Dash, representing Assembly Square Auto Sales LLC, told the committee the business would keep one vehicle inside and 18 vehicles outside and would operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Sunday. “People generally shop for cars at nights and weekends, so those are kind of important,” Dash said.
Dash said the proposed use is a continuation of the property’s prior rental-car use by Enterprise Rent-A-Car and that, under the city’s zoning ordinance, auto rentals and sales are treated as the same use. He also said a lease for the site is in place but contingent on approval of the licenses. Ward Councilor McLaughlin was notified of the application and “did indicate to me that he had no issue with the licenses,” Dash said.
Committee Chair Burnley opened the public hearing on the two items, allowed the applicant to speak, and closed the hearing after no members of the public spoke. Chair Burnley indicated the committee would “waive them both on the table for approval.” Councilor Strezzo moved to recommend approval and Councilor Davis seconded; members present voted in favor and the committee forwarded the items to the full City Council. Chair Burnley cautioned that the licenses are not final until approved by the full council and signed by the mayor and said applicants will receive the licenses by mail after final approval.
The applications seek to fill a previously vacant site at 37 Mystic Ave and to continue the site’s prior vehicle-storage and rental-related uses. The applicant team that joined the hearing included principals Thatcher Irvin and Chris Vigos and attorney Adam Dash. The committee took no additional conditions, and no public opposition or substantive debate was recorded during the hearing.
