Council adopts Black History Month proclamation; Glen Hills students perform; council also approves proclamations, newsletter and consent items

Alderman John Vukovich, who sponsored the proclamation, told the council the recognition serves to highlight achievements, confront racism and foster cultural understanding and civic engagement. "I'm black, so this is my month," Vukovich said, adding that Black History Month also has "educational value" and can help the community learn from past mistakes.
Students from Glen Hills Middle School — identified in the council record as Avery and Victoria (sixth grade) and other classmates — performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and presented a short group interpretation piece the school called a "fairy tale report." After the remarks and performance, the council voted to adopt the proclamation; the chair corrected a date in the final paragraph before signing the document.
Motions and other routine approvals: Alderman Vukovich moved adoption of the Black History Month proclamation and Alderman Doherty seconded; the proclamation passed by voice vote. The council also adopted a proclamation recognizing two Eagle Scouts (Xander Schmelzling and Eric Leosso) after a short presentation; that proclamation was moved by Alderman Elsinger and seconded by Alderman Doherty and was adopted by voice vote. The council approved the spring 2025 newsletter on a motion by Alderman Schmelzinger, with Alderman Gellhart seconding, and directed staff to print and mail the newsletter after minor corrections that staff had made; the council approved the consent agenda (minutes, payments and monthly reports) by voice vote.
State officials: later in the meeting State Senator Dora Drake and State Representative Darren Madison presented a joint proclamation recognizing Glendale’s 75th anniversary and offered brief remarks about state budget priorities, including proposed education investments and tax measures in the governor’s budget. Senator Drake and Representative Madison encouraged local officials to submit concerns and stories to the state delegation as the budget process proceeds.
