Saroyan Elementary reports strong test‑score gains, attendance work and PBIS recognition

Saroyan Elementary Principal Joelle Mills reported to the board on Feb. 25 that the school has shown year‑to‑date gains on interim assessments and the English learner summative assessment, and that staff are focusing on writing and engagement strategies for continued improvement.
Mills said I‑Ready reading proficiency rose from 26.4% in the fall to 44.5% in the winter; math I‑Ready proficiency increased from 14.5% to 32.9% in the same period. She reported that English learners’ ELPAC summative results showed dramatic growth — the school moved from below 35% proficiency to about 75% on the ELPAC summative, which Mills said represented the highest growth in the district.
Mills told trustees the school’s current student attendance rate is 93.5% and chronic absenteeism stands at 21.8%, both areas the site continues to address through family‑liaison outreach, mentoring and attendance incentives. Mills also reported Saroyan earned a California PBIS Silver Implementation Award and has used Prop. 28 (arts) monies to fund art experiences, including a pottery day, and that field trips are scheduled for each grade level before the end of the year.
Trustees praised teachers and staff for the progress shown in interim assessments and English learner outcomes.
