Edinburg CISD board approves facility projects, summer program and multiple personnel recommendations

The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a series of facilities, program and personnel actions during the Feb. 21 meeting, including naming the district’s Athletic Fine Arts Complex after a longtime coach and approving summer programming and multiple procurement items.

Trustees voted to name the Athletic Fine Arts Complex for Coach Robert Alaniz. The motion carried after a trustee moved and the board recorded the affirmative vote. The board also approved the district’s 2025 specialized summer program package and a set of consent‑agenda procurement items that included architectural services, competitive bid awards and infrastructure contracts.

On facilities and procurement, trustees approved a request for qualifications for architectural services covering Edinburgh High School, Edinburgh North High School, Johnny Camides High School and Robert Vela High School. The board approved competitive proposals to replace district entrance doors (about 85 elementary and 54 secondary doors were cited in the presentation) using safety grant funding; administration said the door work is phase one with separate window film/security film planned as a later phase. Trustees also approved procurement for charter bus services, E‑rate basic maintenance, internet service provider contracts, intercom systems and other districtwide competitive proposals.

Trustees approved personnel and administrative recommendations partly in open session and partly after closed‑session consideration. The board adopted the superintendent evaluation and approved administrative recommendations for several hires and appointments: the appointment of Viridiana Madrigal as counselor for Robert E. Lee Elementary, the hiring of Rado Trevino as coordinator for teacher incentive allotment and talent development, and the appointment of Jose Camacho as district engineer for maintenance and facilities. The board also voted to terminate the at‑will employment of Maria del Carmen Rubio on counsel’s advice. Trustees moved and approved other personnel items listed on the superintendent’s employment/resignation/renewal slate.

Board members and administrators discussed vendor selection and procurement timelines. Trustees heard that the door replacement contract had been competitively bid and that increases tied to market factors were a concern; trustees instructed staff to monitor price adjustments and to coordinate phases (door replacements and window film) to limit exposure between contracts.

On the superintendent’s contract, trustees adopted the superintendent’s evaluation in open session but, because not all seven trustees were present, took no final action on a contract change and deferred contract decisions until a full board can convene.
