JERSEY CITY — The Division of Community Development notified the municipal council that Jersey City will accept a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) award of $1,000,000 to support a citywide spring tree‑planting initiative and that the city received a $15,915 increase in community service block grant funding to augment the senior nutrition program.
Brian Rans said the $1,000,000 award was granted through the city’s annual HUD CDBG allocation and will fund the Division of Sustainability’s 2025 spring tree‑planting initiative. Rans said the CDBG public‑facilities dollars will be used for infrastructure improvements, to buy trees and planting materials, support composting and pay recycling staff; planting locations will be targeted to low‑ and moderate‑income areas as required by HUD regulations.
Rans also said the city received a second tranche of community service block grant funding for program year 2024 that added approximately $15,915. The city plans to allocate that increase to the Health and Human Services senior nutrition program.
Why it matters: The tree‑planting program aims to expand canopy and neighborhood greening in lower‑income areas; the additional CSBG money will sustain senior nutrition services.
Next steps: Staff said locations for tree planting are being finalized and that the Division of Sustainability will proceed with the competitive procurement required for the work.
