Youth council urges public works to inspect sidewalks near Arch Creek Elementary

The North Miami Youth Council asked the city’s Public Works department to inspect and address pedestrian sidewalk conditions near Arch Creek Elementary and North Miami Senior High School.

Councilwoman Sema Moore raised the sidewalk repairs item and described hazardous pedestrian conditions near Arch Creek Elementary, saying that damaged or missing sidewalks make it difficult and frightening for young children to cross streets. “Imagine the little ones who walk home and are suffering, like, scared to cross the street,” Moore said.

Council members agreed to refer the matter to Public Works. The motion, recorded in the meeting as made by Councilwoman Clara Saint Amor and seconded by Youth Council Mayor Stacy Cortier, directed Public Works to look into the pedestrian sidewalk in the vicinity of Arch Creek Elementary and North Miami Senior High School and passed 4-0.

The discussion emphasized pedestrian safety near schools and noted that adding lights alone had not resolved the problem because of limited space on the sidewalks. The council asked Public Works to examine repairs and propose solutions that make sidewalks more accessible for children.

The motion did not specify a timeline, funding source, or specific repair scope; council members said they expect Public Works to report back with findings.
