Arts Alive seeks $10,000 county support to sustain youth camps and workshops in New Kent

Ellen Davis, representing Arts Alive, told the Board of Supervisors on Feb. 10 that Arts Alive’s programming — including art and Missoula drama summer camps and Saturday visual-arts workshops — draws a substantial share of participants from New Kent.
Davis said 52 percent of art-camp participants over the past two years and about 45 percent of Missoula (drama) camp participants come from New Kent. Arts Alive asks the county to repeat a $10,000 grant the organization received last year to keep youth programs affordable. Davis also said Arts Alive will apply to the Creative Community Partnership grant and that the partnership award would match up to $4,500 of their request; the group plans to continue scholarship supports and to work with Bay Transit for transportation options.
Board members thanked Davis and indicated support; multiple supervisors praised the program’s value. No formal appropriation or motion was made during the public-comment period on that request; the matter was presented as an appeal for continued funding.
Notes: Arts Alive said it keeps prices low, offers scholarships, and is beginning Saturday visual-arts workshops targeted to middle and high-school students. The group identified Laura Richards as its executive director and requested county support of $10,000 and pursuit of the $4,500 Creative Community Partnership match.
