Fair association seeks to expand board, commission approves appointments

Mary Rose and other representatives of the Seward County Five State Fair Association told commissioners they had held a membership drive with 28 attendees and that association leaders seek to change the bylaws to expand the board from 11 directors (6 association-appointed, 5 commission-appointed) to 15 (8 association-appointed, 7 commission-appointed). The proposed bylaws also call for a majority of directors to be county residents and for K-State Research & Extension and the Seward County Activity Center director to remain nonvoting members.
Commission staff explained that the association intends staggered one-, two- and three-year terms so expertise is retained as the association reconstitutes leadership. Commissioners received ballots to appoint seven county-appointed directors; staff said some association appointees had not yet been finalized due to term-staggering decisions. After completing ballots, commissioners moved and seconded a motion to approve the fair-association appointments; the motion passed by unanimous show of hands.
Association leaders requested a follow-up work session with the commission within 30 days to review contracts, timelines and construction plans at the fairgrounds; staff agreed to schedule a meeting and to make liaison participation available by Zoom for members who could not attend in person.
