Tazewell County supervisors voted Jan. 7 to accept the northern portion of Martin Street into the county road system following a public hearing.
County staff said the section extends approximately 268 feet from its intersection with Thru Drive and has a recorded 40‑foot platted right‑of‑way. The planning commission reviewed the request, assigned it to its roads committee for inspection and recommended that the board accept the road into the county system.
Staff said six landowners along the northern portion of Martin Street would be affected. Affected residents spoke at the public hearing and said the roadway is in poor condition; one resident said he and neighbors had spent personal funds maintaining the segment. The board noted the southern portion of Martin Street had been accepted and paved in 2024, leaving the northern segment functionally the same road but not previously taken into the county system.
Supervisor Revant moved to accept the northern portion of Martin Street into the county road system; the motion passed on a voice vote. County staff said acceptance will be followed by administrative steps, including notices and placement on the county’s paving and maintenance schedule; staff told residents they would work to include the road in the next available paving cycle.
Ending: The board closed the public hearing, accepted the road, and staff said they will add the accepted segment to the county’s road list for grading and eventual paving per the road program schedule.
