House creates Oversight Subcommittee on Public Health and Food Security, sets regular meeting time

The Michigan House Oversight Subcommittee on Public Health and Food Security held its first organizational meeting. A letter from State Rep. Jay DeBoer appointed Representatives Matt Bierlein as chair, Brad Paquette as vice chair, Jamie Green and Sharon McDonald as minority vice chair, and Felipe Sterngloo as members of the subcommittee.
The committee adopted Tuesday at noon in Room 326 of the House Office Building as its regular day, time and location for meetings. Rep. Brad Paquette moved the motion to establish the schedule; the motion carried with five members present.
Representative Matt Bierlein, the chair, opened the meeting by describing the subcommittee’s purpose and expectations. “Public health and food security are not just policy issues, they are fundamental to the strength of our communities and the future of our state,” Bierlein said. He asked members to submit priorities and goals for the term to his office and said he hoped for “thoughtful discussions” and a “solutions oriented” committee. Bierlein added, “I am confident that regardless of party lines, we can find common ground in the shared mission of improving public health and food security in this state and ensuring that our tax dollars are going to good use.”
Procedural matters at the meeting followed the uniform committee rules noted in chapter 4 of the House Rules. The clerk read Representative DeBoer’s letter appointing members to the subcommittee; attendance was taken and the chair declared that five members constituted a quorum. After adopting the regular schedule, the chair adjourned the meeting.
No policy reports, budget actions, proposed legislation, or stakeholder testimony were presented during this session; the meeting was organizational and limited to appointments, adoption of committee rules and schedule, and introductory remarks.
