Parks and Recreation staff announce board recruitment, program schedules, and project updates

Ashley Howe, director of the Arts and Recreation Department, reported a series of administrative and program updates to the Parks and Recreation Commission, including board recruitment deadlines, spring program timelines and multiple park projects.
Howe said boards and commission recruitment is open with applications due to the city clerk by January 19; interviews with council members are scheduled for January 27, February 10 and February 24, and appointments are expected to begin in March. "Board reminder that boards and commission recruitment is open right now," Howe said.
Howe briefed commissioners on programming timelines: the department is assembling the spring/summer 2025 activity guide (content due before the end of the month, registration opens Feb. 25 at noon, and mailed guides will be distributed at least two weeks before registration). She also promoted a Marin Wedding and Event Expo at the community center on Feb. 23 where the department will staff a rentals booth.
On aquatics and training, Howe said a new session of swim lessons starts the week of Jan. 13 (weekdays) and Jan. 25 (weekends), and the department will offer a free shallow-water lifeguard training Jan. 21–23 that the staff described as a $233 class being offered at no cost to attract adults.
Project updates and planning: Howe described the Boyle Park master-plan kickoff with consultant RHAA and a now-designated advisory group; upcoming community engagement and an on-site conditions assessment were planned. The department also presented a playground-replacement rating of all city playgrounds, with top candidates for replacement identified as Scott Holland, Sycamore Park and Old Mill Park to address aging materials and ADA issues. Commissioners asked for the replacement-priority spreadsheet to be shared with the commission at a future meeting.
Other notes: staff reported that the Miller Grove beautification effort is progressing with involvement from the historical society and council members; the golf-clubhouse entrance sign is being replaced with landscaping work underway; and Touchstone Golf’s Porch 1919 construction is on time for a March completion and an April opening, per staff.
The commission approved the meeting agenda and the consent calendar by voice vote at the start of the session (motions were seconded and both were carried).
