Ashley Howe, director of the Arts and Recreation Department, told the Mill Valley Parks and Recreation Commission that the sand-volleyball project has cleared a CEQA negative declaration and the remaining funding gap is $62,005.48.
The project’s original fundraising goal was $350,000, Howe said. She told commissioners that the city had secured a grant of almost $178,000 and that private giving and new online donations organized by the Friends of Mill Valley Parks and Recreation reduced the shortfall. "The project did receive the CEQA negative declaration," Howe said, calling that a positive step in moving the project forward.
Howe said the commission and staff had discussed exceeding the $350,000 goal to add amenities such as shade and seating to improve transitions between the sand courts and adjacent athletic fields. The Friends of Mill Valley Parks and Recreation also voted to pledge additional financial support and collected online donations through their site, she said.
No formal funding action or award was taken at the meeting; Howe described the status and encouraged continued fundraising. The commission did not set a new fundraising deadline or identify specific sources to close the $62,005.48 gap at the meeting.
