Planning staff briefs commission on annual code cleanup process; package expected in summer

Planning Department staff briefed the Redmond Planning Commission Feb. 26 on the city’s annual code cleanup program and described the types of minor, non‑policy amendments that staff would bundle into a single package for commission review in the third quarter of 2025.

Jeff Churchill, staff, explained the purpose of the annual code cleanup: to correct typographical errors, remove duplicative or inconsistent language, clarify citations and align the municipal code with state law where required. “It is not anything that changes policy,” Churchill said, and staff described the package as a set of small, technical amendments rather than substantive zoning changes.

Examples staff provided included amending allowed‑use tables to fix inadvertent prohibitions, updating code language to reflect state daycare rules, and adding cross‑references so readers can find the Critical Aquifer Recharge Area requirements. Staff said the annual cleanup would come as a single package of a handful of minor amendments and that the commission should expect the package in summer 2025; staff also outlined how commissioners or members of the public can submit cleanup suggestions via email at any time.

A brief question‑and‑answer segment clarified that code cleanup items must be consistent with the comprehensive plan; staff noted the comprehensive plan’s PI‑17 policy calling for clear, comprehensive development regulations. The commission offered no substantive objections; staff said they will return with the cleanup package for formal review later in the year.
