Redmond to open expanded Anderson Park community garden with accessible beds, pollinator plantings

Parks operations manager Darcy Rayner Shepherd and Parks Director Loreen Hamilton told the Committee of the Whole on Feb. 22 that Redmond will complete an expansion at Anderson Park for the 2025 growing season, following a 2024 expansion at Jewell Park.
Shepherd said the Anderson Park garden will include more than 400 square feet of pollinator plantings, 20 standard beds, six accessible beds, a community harvest and gathering table, two storage sheds, a community seed library and seating within the garden area. Staff noted construction was delayed by storm damage and frozen ground after a windstorm and “bomb cyclone,” but that a solar study showed the garden site has adequate sunlight for plantings.
Councilmembers thanked staff and the Parks and Trails Commission, which identified the expansion as a priority in earlier park planning cycles. Councilmember Stewart asked how the bomb cyclone had affected sun/shade ratios; staff said solar analysis found ample light and that the larger delay came from staff resource constraints responding to storm recovery.
Council discussion highlighted the value of accessible beds for gardeners with mobility needs and anticipated high downtown resident interest because of the garden’s central location. No formal committee vote was recorded; staff said the garden is on track to open for the 2025 season.
