The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 25 adopted a proclamation declaring February 2025 as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month and heard remarks on local resources available to teens.
Barbara Yook, the county district attorney, described patterns of controlling or abusive behavior in adolescent relationships and urged parents and schools to watch for warning signs, noting that many teens do not report abuse. Karen West of the Children’s Advocacy Center summarized services provided to teens during calendar year 2024–25: her agency served 52 teens (ages 13–17) between Jan. 1, 2024 and Jan. 30, 2025, 25 of whom were newly enrolled and 27 returning clients; 11 of those teens had experienced sexual assault, she said. The Children’s Advocacy Center and Calaveras Crisis Center provide free counseling, court accompaniment, and outreach programs for healthy relationships, West said.
Board action: Following public comments, the board voted unanimously to proclaim February 2025 as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month and encouraged citizen, agency and educator support for prevention and victim assistance.
Context: The district attorney and school resource officer (who had to leave for a call) described warning signs of abusive behavior that can escalate from controlling acts, including phone checks and restrictions on social activity. Board members asked for continued outreach and urged parents and community members to report concerns and use available counseling resources for teens.
