Board hears Japanese textbook proposal; vote deferred to next meeting

Teachers and curriculum staff asked the board to approve a new Japanese textbook series that covers levels 1–3 and includes AP-level material, online practice tools and ACTFL alignment.
Nanette Suarez, K–12 data and assessment coordinator, introduced teachers Courtney Colpin and Lauren Kendall, who said the series emphasizes communicative tasks, authentic Japanese texts and resources for non-alphabetic writing systems. Kendall said the materials include “do‑able” learning targets for students and an online pronunciation and practice component that students can access at home.
Board members asked whether the three levels cover a four‑year high school sequence and whether the material can support IB or AP coursework. Teachers said the three-level set provides depth that can be extended into a fourth year and be adapted for AP and IB use; they also confirmed Japanese Level 1 is offered to eighth‑grade students.
The district will present the textbook adoption as an action item at the board’s next meeting on March 11, 2025.
