School construction update: Western Grove K-8 kicks off; Legacy and Westwood high schools near completion

Chief of Operations Terrence O'Leary and his facilities team updated the board on three construction projects: the new Western Grove K-8 (working name), Legacy High School and Fort Pierce Westwood High School.
O'Leary said site work for the Western Grove K-8 will begin immediately and the project is scheduled for a March 2026 opening; related road work (Sundance Vista Boulevard) is expected to start the first week of March, with lift-station completion targeted for December 2025 and road asphalt and sidewalks by February 2026. The site is about 21.4 acres and the building is roughly 217,000 square feet with a 1,900-student capacity. The design includes a bus loop sized for 40 buses and a parent-loop stacking capacity of about 284 vehicles. The district is coordinating a memorandum of understanding with the city to share a neighboring 110-acre regional sports park.
O'Leary showed renderings and noted site features such as two classroom pods (first and second floors), an administration wing, a gymnasium and a cafetorium with a stage. He said the district is working with the developer on additional sidewalks and golf-cart access to serve nearby communities.
On the high-school projects, O'Leary said Legacy High School and Fort Pierce Westwood High School are further along. He described Legacy's site grading and athletic fields, and said Westwood has tilt wall construction complete and is "drying in;" windows and doors were being installed and ancillary facilities such as an agricultural barn were rising. O'Leary said the construction manager for the Western Grove project is Wharton-Smith, a contract previously approved by the board.
Superintendent Prince proposed holding the March 25 board workshop at the Western Grove K-8 groundbreaking (9 a.m.), followed by a site tour of Legacy High School and Fort Pierce Westwood for board members who wish to attend. O'Leary and board members praised the facilities and operations teams for keeping the projects on schedule.
