Parks committee declines $600,000 state grant application, cites required 50% match

The Trussville County Parks and Recreation Committee recommended that the county not apply at this time for a state local parks and recreation grant worth $600,000 that would have required a 50% local match.
Alicia Ellie McKinley Moore presented the grant proposal, which included projects such as tennis and pickleball courts, volleyball, expanded walking trails and related amenities. The committee discussed the financial match requirement and potential obligations; members expressed concern about the required 50% match and the county’s share of the project costs.
Committee members also discussed including a $50,000 update to the county master plan — a requirement every five years — as part of a grant submission. The committee declined the motion to apply for the grant at this time but noted that the county might pay $50,000 to update the master plan separately so it would be ready for future grant opportunities.
The committee’s inspection of a recent playground passed a final inspection on Feb. 13, and committee members discussed signage and donor recognition panels for the park. The parks committee will meet next on March 11.
