Commissioners, residents discuss West Tennessee Avenue repairs and intergovernmental mileage agreement with Polk County

Residents and county officials discussed an intergovernmental agreement and road repair needs for West Tennessee Avenue during public comment at the Fannin County Board of Commissioners meeting.

A county official summarized recent outreach to neighboring jurisdictions and described mileage and maintenance topics tied to an agreement with Polk County. The official said presentations had been made to local communities and that West Tennessee Avenue has segments crossing state lines and multiple jurisdictional boundaries, complicating maintenance responsibility.

Public works staff described the road condition in detail. Officials said the corridor is roughly six-tenths of a mile of concern, with one-tenth of a mile identified as the worst section that will require milling and full replacement of the base before repaving. The staff estimate for repair of that problem area was “probably a hundred thousand, 90 thousand dollars” — the speaker framed it as an estimate and said costs could vary once the surface is opened and the subgrade examined.

Staff said the worst stretch begins near the state line in front of a ball field and that the full repair would include milling the bad curve and repaving adjacent sections; the remainder of the corridor could likely be addressed with standard paving. The official said timing would depend on weather and other factors and gave no firm start date.

Commissioners and residents noted the cross-jurisdictional nature of the road, and the county said it would continue coordinating with neighboring jurisdictions to clarify responsibilities and funding for the repair.
