Wausau commission approves guide to historic registries with minor edits

Commission member Blake presented the guide, which explains the differences between local, state and federal historic designations, outlines the application process, and addresses frequently asked questions and myths about listing property on local registries. Blake said the draft borrows language from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation guide and has been adjusted for local use. One line referencing a specific class-2 district was marked for removal so the guide would remain accurate if district classifications change.
Commissioners asked that staff make minor typographical edits and add contact options (web and email) for public access. The commission voted to move the guide forward with the noted changes. Staff said the city will receive a copy and the guide can be posted on the department website as a PDF when it is in its final form.
The commission agreed to use the guide as part of its public outreach and to incorporate it into future public hearings and property-owner communications.
