The City of Wausau Historic Preservation Commission voted to grant a certificate of appropriateness for the First Presbyterian Church's proposed exterior project in downtown Wausau at its February 2025 meeting.

During discussion the church representative described the chosen roofing/shingle color to the commission, saying, “it’s not green, it’s not black ... this is old hickory,” and indicated the sample distributed to commissioners matched the product to be used. A commissioner asked whether a different color—if it turned out not to be the sample—would require returning to the commission. Staff and members said color was generally not a focus unless it was “glaring.”
Staff indicated the signed certificate would be available quickly and the building permit would be issued by the inspections office once the applicant submits the final materials. The commission chair said the certificate could be signed immediately and provided the applicant the next morning.
The commission's action applies to the project as proposed; commissioners noted that small differences in color shades typically do not trigger a new review absent a significant departure from the approved sample.
