Plainfield SD 202’s Board of Education on Feb. 26 approved school fees for the 2025–26 school year, vendor contracts and payment of bills, while the board also approved extending a $50 technology fee districtwide.
During the site and finance report, committee chair Barb Seiden said the five-year forecast keeps the district within its targeted savings goals but does not reflect possible teacher-market adjustments or all strategic-plan initiatives, including the newly announced eight-period high school day. The board then considered school fees (Policy 4:138) and related financial items.
Finance discussion and clarifications: a board member asked for a revenue clarification and staff replied that, excluding the tech fee, the total revenue generated by student fees is $882,900 (staff had earlier discussed a higher figure, approximately $1.2 million). The district’s operating revenue figure cited by a board member in discussion was $452,204,425; the $882,900 would represent approximately 0.2% (one-fifth of a percent) of that revenue. Board discussion noted the $50 technology fee already applied to K–8; extending $50 to 9–12 would increase high-school fees by 23% (as presented), and the K–5 and 6–8 increases had been 37% and 29% respectively when the fee was implemented for those grades.
The motion to approve school fees as presented produced a split roll call (the meeting record shows some board members voting no). The motion carried.
The board approved agenda items 9.4–9.8, including vendor contracts and agreements (Policy 4:60), monthly financials and the payment of bills totaling about $9.9 million; those items passed by roll call. The board also set future finance agenda items including enrollment projections, a strategic-plan update and vendor/contract approvals.
A board member noted an aspiration for tuition-free public education but said, in practice, the district still relies heavily on tax revenue and that fee-waiver procedures exist for families who qualify. The board asked staff to return additional enrollment and budget data in a future meeting.
