Xavier Montessori lab school to join Cincinnati Public Schools; parents asked to use central enrollment

Superintendent Murphy told the board Feb. 24 that a Montessori laboratory school based at the Bramble Nature Center is in discussions to join Cincinnati Public Schools after the Xavier Montessori lab announced a closure.
As of the Feb. 24 update, the school community reported 117 students associated with the lab school and the district’s customer-care center had logged about 45 current CPS students expressing interest in transferring to the campus for the upcoming school year. The superintendent said three preschool classrooms currently on the campus would remain as part of the school site.
Administrators emphasized the enrollment process follows the district’s established procedures: families who want to enroll should contact the district’s customer-care center. The district clarified that the lab school’s initial plan did not include district-provided transportation; if the board wants to provide transportation the administration will analyze routes and costs and return with a recommendation. The board asked the administration to calculate transportation cost estimates once student origins are known.
District staff also discussed building capacity: administrators said Bramble’s building has 15 ready-to-occupy classrooms and capacity estimates cited in discussion ranged near 350–375 students depending on classroom sizing and use; staff noted preschool classroom configurations can change how effective capacity is calculated.
Board members asked administrators to track enrollment trends and related facility and funding implications, noting state rules about underutilized school buildings could be sensitive to how preschool or lab programs are counted in utilization metrics.
Administrators said they would continue outreach and return to the board with follow-up data on enrollment, capacity and transportation costs; no formal board vote or action occurred Feb. 24.
