Planning commission recommends reducing multifamily parking requirement from 3 to 2 spaces per unit

At its Feb. 20 meeting the La Verne Planning Commission voted to send a favorable recommendation to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen to amend Section 4.01 of the La Verne zoning ordinance governing off-street parking.
Mayor Cole introduced the proposed change, saying it responds to an earlier discussion and would add a specific use definition for multifamily apartments of three or more units and set their requirement at two parking spaces per dwelling. He and staff clarified that gated apartment complexes with a minimum of 50 units would remain at three spaces per dwelling and that the proposed language contains a typographical error that staff will correct before forwarding the recommendation.
Commissioners discussed the presentation briefly. One commissioner asked for the figures to be explicitly included in the ordinance text to avoid confusion; staff agreed to restore the figures and to correct the typographical error. Commissioners noted that the proposed change would put La Verne’s multifamily parking standard in line with nearby municipalities such as Smyrna and Murfreesboro, as stated in the staff presentation.
A motion to forward a favorable recommendation to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen passed with no recorded opposition.
