A representative of the regional mosquito and vector control district told the Cloverdale City Council about the district’s 2024 surveillance, outreach and control efforts, including new technologies and recent locally acquired cases.
The district representative said the agency logged roughly 6,200 service requests in 2024 and delivered 293 classroom presentations reaching about 6,700 children, covering mosquitoes, ticks and rodents. The speaker said technicians inspect roughly 25,000 locations and that the district sets 50–60 traps weekly for surveillance and larval sampling.
The presentation outlined the district’s integrated pest-management approach, noting the district monitors 23 mosquito species but focuses on about half a dozen species that pose public-health risks or large nuisance problems. The representative said the district performed pathogen testing on mosquitoes and reported that locally acquired cases of a mosquito-borne disease increased from three in 2023 to 12 in 2024 in Southern California, which the speaker described as “concerning.” The transcript identifies that some testing needs to go to the state lab when it goes beyond the district’s in-house capabilities.
The speaker described the district’s tick-testing capacity as limited to Borrelia (Lyme disease) at present and said other tick-borne disease testing requires state partnerships. He urged residents who find suspect ticks to photograph or collect them and contact the district so staff can investigate whether a breeding population is present or whether the specimen was transported from elsewhere.
On control technologies, the representative highlighted two developments: locally 3-D–printed traps the district’s lab director developed and plans to present at state and national conferences, and sterile-insect techniques being trialed in Southern California that use irradiation or genetic approaches to reduce mosquito populations. The presenter said radiation-based sterile-insect approaches have more established science and lower cost at present, but other self-limiting technologies are being evaluated elsewhere.
In the question-and-answer period residents asked whether ground-nesting yellowjackets in storm drains qualify for district removal; the representative said it depends on whether work would require altering the structure and that technicians can inspect to determine whether the district can handle specific sites. Residents also raised concerns about Lone Star ticks; the presenter said the district follows up on Lone Star tick sightings with ecological searches to determine whether populations are established.
The presentation included outreach and education metrics, a summary of lab testing practices, and an emphasis on continued surveillance for invasive vectors such as Aedes species that transmit dengue.
The district representative supplied contact options and asked residents to report suspect ticks and vector activity so staff can follow up.
