Vacaville high school student urges county support for student-led summer tutoring program

Paulina Sweeney, identified as a senior at Vacaville High School and a Kiwanis volunteer, told the Solano County Board of Supervisors that the student-led summer tutoring program has served hundreds of local students and needs community support to expand.
Sweeney said the program launched in 2022 as a COVID-era catch-up effort and since then has served an average of 208 students per summer with roughly 68 high-school tutors, operating virtually and at local libraries; last summer the program added Benicia to its service area. Sweeney cited a county assessment figure, saying only "48.2 percent of students in Solano County met or exceeded their grade-level standard in ELA on the CAASPP assessment" and said the tutoring program aims to reduce summer learning loss.
She asked the board and community partners to help in four areas: marketing and outreach, financial support, coaching and advisorship, and learning resources. A supervisor encouraged Sweeney to provide the board with a written list of needs and contacts for follow-up; the supervisor said they would circulate the information to the board and offered to help with outreach and partnership connections.
Ending: Supervisors invited Sweeney to submit the programmaterials and needs list for follow-up; no county funding decision was made at the meeting.
