Resident urges city action on potholes on state roads after county and neighboring city responses

Adam Muneer, a Morgantown resident, spoke during the public-comment period of the Committee of the Whole on Feb. 25 about hazardous potholes on State Route 19 (Exit 152 between McDonald’s and the Morgantown Mall).
Muneer described the location as “impassable without risk of damage to the vehicle,” said he had contacted the West Virginia Division of Highways and received a response that temporary patching will be performed “as weather permits” and that permanent repairs will follow the department’s maintenance plan schedule. He said nearby Bridgeport coordinated with the Division of Highways and the city to perform temporary pothole repairs and asked whether Morgantown could take similar action, including creating a contingency fund, pursuing partnerships with utilities or private groups, or using city crews to make temporary repairs on state-maintained roads when the state cannot respond quickly.
Muneer asked council to consider options for faster temporary fixes and noted that potholes impose direct costs on drivers and businesses. He said the city currently appears to lack contingency plans to address state-road defects when the state’s schedule delays repairs and requested that council and staff examine possible local responses.
