City hears 2024 urban deer-hunt report: 143 deer harvested, 43 donated to meat program

A presenter updating the Committee of the Whole on the 2024 urban deer-hunt program reported on Feb. 25 that the city’s fourteenth season harvested 143 deer: 111 antlerless deer and 32 antlered bucks.
The presenter said 43 harvested deer were donated to the city’s meat-donation program, yielding 1,353 pounds of ground venison for distribution. Over the fourteenth season, hunters assisted Montogalia County deputies with trespass incidents, helped WVU Police with illegal four-wheeler activity on campus property, and assisted in a case involving a person hunting with a rifle on WVU farmland; the latter incidents were under investigation.
Officials noted the program’s long-term totals now include 1,414 deer harvested over 14 seasons and roughly 14,500 pounds of donated meat. Program organizers asked property owners and residents to consider access and said development and shrinking parcels create ongoing challenges for placing hunters in areas of need, particularly in neighborhoods such as Suncrest and near Norwood. The presenter encouraged ward-level engagement to identify potential properties and said applications and a safety class are scheduled in the spring and summer.
