Committee approves resolution to dissolve North Logan–Hyde Park justice court
Summary

The House committee on Feb. 26 unanimously passed Senate Joint Resolution 1, which dissolves the North Logan–Hyde Park Justice Court after the two cities completed a local review and obtained Judicial Council approval to close the court on April 1.
Senator Wilson (presenting the resolution) said the cities surveyed their caseload and staffing and found the court handled a large share of cases involving non-residents, and the cities experienced difficulties hiring and retaining clerks. The sponsor said the cities have agreed to buy out the current judge and have followed the Judicial Council process for closure.
Representative Quinn moved to pass SJR 1 with a favorable recommendation; the committee approved the motion by voice vote.
Ending note: the committee recorded no public testimony on the resolution in the hearing; SJR 1 will move forward per the committee’s favorable recommendation.
