Senate panel extends AI policy office’s sunset to continue regulatory work

The Senate Business and Labor Standing Committee favorably recommended Senate Bill 332, which extends the statutory authorization for the state’s AI Policy Lab in the Department of Commerce.
Senator Colinmore, the sponsor, said the office was created last year to study artificial intelligence policy and to run a regulatory mitigation program that allows companies to test AI applications under controlled conditions. He told the committee the original repeal date was approaching and the bill extends the office’s authorization into 2027.
Margaret Willie Bussey, Executive Director of the Department of Commerce, briefed the committee on the office’s work. She said the office hired an experienced director and staff, launched a learning agenda (including AI and mental health and deepfakes), and executed regulatory mitigation agreements to help Utah companies test AI products.
Committee members discussed effective dates and technical fixes; Senator Ipsen suggested an immediate effective date or a short administrative pause be clarified on the floor. The committee approved the bill unanimously.
