Greene County schedules tire-amnesty weekend, approves January financials and reviews recycling activity

Greene County officials approved January minutes and the month’s financial report during a meeting that also reviewed recycling-center usage and set a tire-amnesty weekend, officials said.

The session opened with a motion to approve the January minutes and, later, a motion to approve the January financial statements and bills; both motions were moved, seconded and carried by the members present. A motion to adjourn was also moved and seconded at the end of the meeting.

The financial update showed a set of monthly receipts and disbursements and reported the county’s cash position in early 2025. One speaker reported the year began with a cash balance of “and $34.39,” receipts from recycling and trash fees of $4,070, and monthly disbursements of about $13,009.25, leaving an end-of-month balance reported as $41,079.48. The speaker said January 2025’s cash balance compared favorably with prior years and later reported a February balance of about $115,000 with all bills paid.

Officials also reviewed recycling-center activity. Staff reported a recent opening period that served 339 people over 12 days, averaging 28 customers per day and generating $1,005 total (about $84 per operating day). For January specifically, the speaker reported 81 customers over 22 operating days (one holiday), with an average of 49.1 customers per day and total collections of $2,714.

Tire-amnesty scheduling and related grant funding took up a substantive portion of the discussion. Officials said they typically hold the event the Saturday closest to Earth Day; because Earth Day falls on April 22 this year, the group agreed to move the amnesty to the following weekend (the weekend of April 26) rather than the Easter weekend. Speaker 3, a staff member, said the county applied again for a state tire grant and that the state “is gonna give us the same grant again this year, another $10,000,” and that the county expects an additional $3,000 from the health department if the state grant is not awarded. The staff member said the event will be free to residents while grant funds last and that rims may be handled differently (recycling or charged when paired with a tire) depending on grant rules.

Officials also noted some logistical follow-ups: moving leftover tires from the prior grant period, better securing connections for moved loads, and advertising the amnesty date. The meeting included a brief mention of issuing IDEM violation letters for the record; staff said those were for records and local enforcement is limited.

The meeting concluded after the motions to approve minutes and financials were carried and a motion to adjourn passed.
