Council approves contract to replace two marina docks with manufacturer-supplied concrete floats

The City Council approved a service agreement to replace two docks at the municipal marina with units supplied and installed by the original manufacturer, a company that builds concrete, foam-filled modular docks with composite and stainless fittings.
Corpus Christi Marine Manager Jonathan Atwood told the council the selected vendor (Bellingham Marine referenced by staff) originally supplied the docks in 2006 and now provides improved materials designed to resist corrosion in the city’s salt-air environment. Staff said the same company and materials were already being used on a larger $20 million dock-replacement project at the marina and that the two docks in this contract are an add-on to that work.
Council members asked why the city was contracting with an out-of-state manufacturer; staff explained there are few U.S. manufacturers able to meet the materials and design specifications that will perform in the local marine environment and that the company uses composite fittings to limit corrosion and extend dock life. Staff said the expected service life of the replaced docks is several decades and should reduce long-term maintenance costs.
The council approved the agreement by voice vote. The motion carried and staff will proceed with contracting and scheduling installation.
