Resident urges city to keep 1222 Washington Street green space in Evanston comprehensive plan

"I would love for it to keep green," Elward said, adding that she had asked staff in April 2024 whether the city would be interested in buying the land so rainwater could be absorbed there instead of running over curbs. "I live across the street from this place...When it rains, the water can actually go there instead of ... coming up over our curb when it does rain. And if we build another building, it's gonna get worse," she said.
Elward also raised concerns about wildlife on the site, telling the committee, "I care about the birds of prey that are already living there and, taking down trees."
Her remarks were made during the committee's public-comment period; the transcript records two people signed up to speak and one person online who did not appear. The committee did not take any formal action on the parcel during the Feb. 24 meeting.
