Committee prepares proficiency monitoring pilot and training sessions for TDII conference

Committee members discussed development of a guidance document for intra‑ and inter‑agency proficiency monitoring and a proposal to host licensing exam opportunities and a proficiency pilot at the TDII annual conference in June 2025.

Staff described a proposed training session covering voluntary licensing, writing standard operating procedures (SOPs), and examples from agency SOPs to give practitioners clearer models for compliance. Shelly Rossi agreed to teach a course at the conference; the plan includes an hour‑to‑90‑minute presentation followed by breakout sessions tailored to specific voluntary licenses (forensic scene, latent prints, reconstruction, etc.).

The committee discussed piloting a single large crime‑scene exercise with a modular checklist so participants can indicate which elements apply to their role (photography, evidence collection, processing). The pilot would be aimed at personnel already familiar with proficiency testing and intended to gather feedback on scalability and logistics. Members suggested offering pre‑course guidance or an online orientation describing the exam and test modules to help attendees prepare.

Staff and presenters agreed to survey potential attendees for interest and to circulate existing reading materials and a built presentation that describes the licensing exam and requirements. The planning team expects to reconvene and provide more detail at the next committee meeting.
