The committee’s subject matter reviewers, led by Megan Rommel, evaluated candidate materials against the 2011 Quality Assurance Standards (QAS) coursework requirements. For candidate 1 the review found the submission lacked both biochemistry and molecular biology coursework meeting the 2011 QAS integral‑component threshold; the committee voted to recommend the commission decline that candidate’s coursework as meeting minimum requirements for forensic biology DNA analyst licensure.
For candidate 2, examiners reviewed a course described by the applicant as a statistics/geometry offering; the committee’s technical review concluded the course met the board’s published statistics guidance and the committee voted to recommend the commission accept that coursework as equivalent to the required three‑semester‑credit‑hour college‑level statistics course.
Candidate 3’s submission lacked sufficient documented molecular biology content in the provided cell biology and microbiology syllabi; after discussion the committee voted to recommend the commission decline approval of that candidate’s coursework. Committee reviewers noted this is a recurring issue when cell biology syllabi do not show coverage of central dogma, replication, transcription or translation at the level the QAS expects.
The final candidate submitted a molecular genetics course. Reviewers identified PCR, sequencing and genetic regulation topics in the syllabus and recommended approval; the committee voted to recommend the commission approve that candidate’s coursework as meeting the molecular biology requirement.
Committee members discussed the forthcoming July 2025 QAS update and asked staff to place a future agenda item to consider whether administrative rules should be revised to track the QAS education changes.
