Sheriff's deputy: January homicide in Fish Springs remains active, investigators seek tips

A Washoe County sheriff's deputy told the Gerlach Community Advisory Board that a homicide in Fish Springs on Jan. 22 is an active investigation and investigators continue to seek tips.
"As I'm sure you've all heard, there was a homicide in Fish Springs on January 22. That was a long day for me and my coworkers... It's an active investigation," Deputy Jackson Cruz told the board. He said multiple law-enforcement personnel are working the case and asked anyone with information to contact investigators.
Cruz said investigators have noticed a drop in residential burglaries in Fish Springs and that early information suggests some possible connection between individuals known in the area and those thefts. "From what we gather so far, a group of individuals is pretty widely known for committing residential burglaries," he said.
When asked how many people live in Fish Springs, Cruz said census figures are unreliable for the valley and that population fluctuates. "If I were to estimate how many people are out there, I mean, it's a huge valley. I don't know. Maybe a hundred people total, maybe," he said.
Cruz told the CAB he has invited Fish Springs homeowners to visit CAB meetings to share concerns and information with law enforcement and county staff. Chair Tina Walters encouraged outreach: "Tell them we'd love to see them," she said.
The remarks occurred during the meeting's public-safety updates and were followed by an offer to speak with Cruz after the meeting for anyone who wanted to share information.
No arrests, charges, or suspect names were announced at the meeting. The sheriff's office described the investigation as ongoing and did not provide additional forensic or suspect information.
